Strange Nature

Exploring the unique, mystical and sublime of the American West, the series Strange Nature blends imagery of found moments alongside the intervention of the artist’s hand. The work examines small, individualistic moments rather than the grandness of the landscape generally presented over the course of the photographic history of the region. Using varying techniques of light and action throughout, Strange Nature alters the recognition, leading to a poetic vision of the land.

Delaney Allen is an American photographer known for his surreal landscape and still-life photography. Influenced by painting and sculpture, he creates a unique visual language both inside and outside of the studio. Implementing light, color, texture, form and craft he captures and builds uncommon, poetic imagery navigating the space between artificial and natural worlds. Generally photographing nature in an unorthodox portrait style, he highlights smaller, specific moments that allow for an abstract sense. Carrying out the occasions, while intertwining the staged studio work, has formed an individual vision within the medium. He has shown nationally and internationally most notably at Crystal Bridges of American Art, Aperture and FOAM (Amsterdam). His first (self-published) monograph, Between Here and There, sits in the collections of the MoMA and Beinecke Library (Yale University) as well as others internationally. He currently resides in Dallas, Texas.
