John Myers was born in 1944 and studied Fine Art at Newcastle University under Richard Hamilton. He exhibited at Serpentine 73 in London and in the same year was awarded the first Arts Council publishing award to produce Middle England, (1974). In 1975 he was included in British Image 1 (Arts Council of Great Britain).
His portraits, Boring photographs, televisions, sub stations and photographs of houses from 1972 – 1979 were exhibited at the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham in 2011-12 and at Dublin Gallery of Photography in 2014.
A selection of his photographs of industry was included in Foto/Industria, Bologna in October/November, 2017. The catalogue raisonne of his portraits was published in April, 2018 by RRB Photobooks.
Looking at the Overlooked – a survey of his urban photography and the Televisions will be published in December, 2018.
The Ten Televisions
The Ten Televisions date from 1973 and engage with the notion of ‘looking at the overlooked’. In the series of television photographs the flickering cathode images are replaced by the reflections in a dead screen. The TV becomes just another object in a still life.
