Tourist Tsunami is a photographic exploration of the complexities and peculiarities of overtourism, a phenomenon that redefines the identity of destinations and the experience of those who visit them. The project investigates, through critical observation and the powerful tool of irony, mainly the anthropological and performative aspects of tourism: the portrayed subjects become the cast of the theater of contemporary travel, where typical rituals, such as coin tossing, selfies in front of centuries-old monuments, tasting of typical products and bizarre and funny situations are staged every day.
The smartphone, a symbol representing the transformation of tourism, becomes both a tool and a protagonist, reflecting the evolution of the traveler’s identity and the way he or she interacts with the world around him or her.
Through intense use of direct flash, the project freezes the movements of the subjects, transforming the protagonists of this theater into static figures, resembling mannequins or dolls. This creates a contrast between the vitality of human activity and the eerie stillness that emerges when gestures are imprinted in time.
This project led to the creation of a first book, “TOURIST TSUNAMI VOL. I.”, printed in 2022, which collects all the photographs made in Italy.
