“Everything you can imagine, nature has already created.”

This quote, among Albert Einstein’s most famous, is the very essence that drives the study and research of biomimicry today, the scientific discipline that analyzes biological systems in nature to replicate their designs and processes, finding technological solutions for industry and research. A concept already present in past narratives.

The myth of Daedalus and his son Icarus, who built wings of wax to escape the labyrinth, is a perfect example of how, by emulating elements found in nature, humans can overcome the most difficult obstacles. However, after their escape, Icarus, driven by enthusiasm, flew too close to the sun, melting the wax wings and plunging into the sea.

Ancient Greek mythology vividly illustrates the tragic consequences when daring to challenge the limits imposed by nature. W.E.I.R.D. is a visual essay, started in 2023, that investigates the relationship between humans and nature, inviting us to reflect on their coexistence.
Within this personal investigation, the photographs show various approaches adopted by humans to replicate natural elements in artificial environments.

The project is supported by the fellowship Strategia Fotografia 2024, promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture.
This fellowship enables the research to be amplified abroad, with an artistic residency in Kyoto, Japan. The images featured in this article were taken during this period of study and research.

This project will be presented in a solo exhibition at Palazzo Ducale in Genoa in November 2025, featuring both the works created during the artist residency and the earlier pieces, thus illustrating the entire process that led the author to further develop the series abroad.

Nicolò Rinaldi (1995) is a documentary photographer and visual researcher, founder of Lucid Dreams creative studio. His artistic research explores the relationship between humans and nature, focusing on the transformation of the landscape due to human intervention and documenting the impact that infrastructure has on the surrounding environment. Adopting an ironic and realistic visual language, since 2021 he has been exploring different social phenomena, dedicating numerous trips to documenting overtourism. In 2024, he won the STRATEGIA FOTOGRAFIA fellowship, promoted by the General Directorate of Contemporary Creativity of the Italian Ministry of Culture, with the project “W.E.I.R.D.”, a documentation of various approaches adopted by humans to replicate natural elements in artificial environments.
He develops both personal and commissioned documentation projects, alternating them with commercial and editorial work in Milan, around Italy and abroad.
