Yassine Alaoui Ismaili aka Yoriyas is a Casablanca-based contemporary Street photographer and choreographer, He started playing chess when he was five years old, leading him to fall in love with mathematics and logic By the age of 16, Yoriyas began Breakdancing! His North African heritage, chess, and mathematic sensibilities lead him to unique methods of expressing his dance style. While travelling as a professional dance artist around the world for dance project, he discovered his passion for photography. His work are characterised by either matching or contrasting colour schemes, symmetrical build-ups, and representations of moments that seem too good to be true.
Yoriyas has exhibited worldwide where his raw and rare talent was rewarded by winning the first places in World street photography Hamburg, Les nuit photographique Essaouira, PhotoMed festival France and Middle east Street photography.
“Since 2013, I have traveled and shot Morocco’s cities extensively, from my hometown Casablanca to Marrakech, Mohammedia, Rabat and Fes, then to the North Chefchauen, Tanger, to Essaouira and Agadir in the south and back to the city I call my own.
Moroccan cities are busy places, and their sea sides brimming with life. The street is the creative space of human moments, the place where people work, meet, exchange, do nothing and display their appearances, cultures and identities.
Morocco is a country of diverse cultures, as urbanization transforms the environment. It is probably one of the most photographed countries in the world. Orient and occident, tradition and modernity, community and individuality create moments of contrast and fusion in this country, which borders both the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean.”
“Some of these human moments happen every day, others happen only once. Through one photograph, we can possibly see, enjoy, think, understand and care more about a scene that we probably wouldn’t have noticed if it wouldn’t have been captured.
This serie documents these moments to give a close and personal view of Moroccan street life from the perspective of a Moroccan, who was born, grew up and still lives there.”
